THERE isn’t one time of year that is easier to stay motivated than another.
Most of us experience ups - and downs - in our motivation to exercise, with the downs often outweighing the ups…
And it can be during these times, when we find ourselves lying on the sofa scrolling through social media, that we stumble across those people who seem to be constantly working out or forever posting about their daily runs, and never struggling with the dips in motivation that the rest of us do.
So what are their secrets?
Well, it turns out these super motivated people we observe from afar don’t have a long list of motivation secrets - instead they all do just ONE thing everyday…
Jeff Spires, Life Coach and Motivation Specialist says: “Our minds are incredible things, but while they can be our ultimate support system, they can also be our biggest problem when it comes to finding motivation to move.
“We know that movement makes our minds and bodies feels amazing, but despite this, often our minds do everything they can to make us put off doing it.
“The truth is, the longer we go without doing exercise or movement, the harder it is to do it!
“If you are wanting to move more but you have found yourself stuck in a motivation rut, then this piece of advice could transform everything for you…
“The key is - CONSISTENCY.
“I work with lots of clients who are super motivated, and they all have one major thing in common - they never fully and completely stop.
“Now I don’t mean working out every day, I mean some form of movement everyday.”
To get science-y about it, becoming super motivated really is about following a formula that is tried and tested by researchers.
Jeff Spires, Life Coach for wellness app ResultsWellnessLifestyle says: “Consistency is the key that unlocks the door to the habits that can alter your behaviour.
“When you are consistent, your brain builds momentum and it is this momentum that you need to have access to motivation.
“This is because our habits are actually unconscious.
“We think that we decide to exercise, but this decision making process takes a lot of effort from us.
“Habits happen without us having to actually put much energy or effort into it.
“So, ultimately, the secret to super motivation is… making exercise a habit - not a decision.
“And how do we do that? We keep movement a regular in our day so that, in some way shape or form, we move as a habit.”
Jeff says: “Instead of trying to make yourself do a long period of intense exercise everyday - work through this structure of movement options.
“Start with the type of exercise you most want to achieve that day. And if your mind isn’t having it, then work down to the next thing on the list.
“Keep doing this until you find the movement that you and your mind agree you can achieve that day.
“This sounds strange, but it is proven to work.”
Here is an example (work down the list from top to bottom):
Today I will…
Do a 30-45 minute workout
Do a 20 minute workout
Do a 10 minute workout
Go for a 30 minute walk
Go for a 10 minute walk
Put on a song and dance around the kitchen
Stretch / do some yoga
Jeff says: “This is what the super motivated do.
“They work with their minds to find a compromise until, eventually, exercise and movement, simply become a habit that they do unconsciously.
“Doing this tricks your brain into making movement a habit because it doesn’t allow it to simply convince you that you can’t find the motivation to do a workout today - it gives it alternatives.
“Eventually your brain gives up using its energy to try to convince you not to move, instead it gives in and accepts that you are going to do some form of exercise everyday.”
